Pre-Reading Preparing the Mind/Brain

Previewing: jacket, front and end pages

Study the jacket.
It will be helpful to actually write down answers to questions. However, be brief. Use key words or make "maps"

Reading the front cover.

    Do you have a response to the visual image?
    Is the response in your body?
    Read the title and the subtitle.
    Convert title and subtitle into questions.
    Are there questions you have about the title?
    What do you already know about these topics or about the key words in the title?
Read all the comments on the back or flaps.
    Do you know any of the people quoted?
    If so, can you see how their ideas might be related to themes we have discussed?
    Do the comments trigger questions or particular interests for you?
    What do you already know about the text from reading the comments?
    What do you already know about the text from what you know about the writers?
Read the preliminary pages of the book and pages at the end of the book

    Copyright page
    Dedication
    Preface and/or foreword
    Author's biography
    Summary of text
    Other publications
      Any information new to you?
      Anything particularly intriguing.
      Does the reading bring up questions for you?*
