Pre-Reading
Text Overview
"Read" the book all the way through looking only at titles and major headings, at pictures, and at tables or charts.
Add interesting or important words you notice to your vocabulary pages.
Notice and maybe record questions you have as you do this surface level reading. Again you are preparing mentally to receive the authors message and discussion, the teaching of the text.
Pay close attention to your mind as you do this reading. The following questions are fundamental to interacting with an author. You will be invited to use them again as you go deeper into the text, but it is also important to notice what comes up now, as a means of heightening your engagement in the process.
What questions arise?
What do you anticipate what the author will talk about in following segments?
What parts of the book are you really looking forward to reading?
Are you aware of having prior knowledge about any themes that you notice in the surface read?
What do you hope for the author to cover as you proceed?
